Our Expertise

Human Computing Associates is led by
Elissa M. Redmiles, Ph.D

In addition to leading HCA, Dr. Redmiles is a faculty member at Georgetown University where she leads the Safety & Society Group. She has published more than 50 peer-reviewed academic articles with over 2000 citations focused on the intersection between technology and: safety, misinformation, fairness, public health, and ethics.

Dr. Redmiles previously held appointments at the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems, Microsoft Research, the University of Zurich Institute for Communication Science and Media Research, and as a fellow at the University of Chicago / World Bank. Prior to her academic career, Dr. Redmiles was the WorldWide Marketing Manager for IBM's $3B/yr Enterprise Content Management division and the Staff Writer for the University of Maryland's Computer Science Department.

Dr. Redmiles' research has been recognized with numerous awards including fellowships and grants from Facebook, the US National Science Foundation, and the US Department of Defense. Her academic work has received 7 paper recognitions from premier computer science conferences such as ACM Computers Communications and Security (CCS), USENIX Security, ACM Conference on Equity and Access in Algorithms, Mechanisms, and Optimization (EAAMO), and ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI). 

Dr. Redmiles regularly writes for the popular press and her work has featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Wired, Scientific American, Forbes, Rolling Stone, FastCompany, CNET, Business Insider, and other international venues. Dr. Redmiles is also regularly interviewed by multiple cybersecurity podcasts and publications including CyberWire and the DailySwig.
